Campus Spotlight: Fly Alongside the Glenmore Jets

Nestled in a quiet neighborhood across the street from the entrance to Goodfellow Air Force Base, Glenmore Elementary Jets are a community of learners who celebrate each other's growth through encouragement, pride and integrity. In this week's campus spotlight, fly alongside the Glenmore Jets.

Glenmore Elementary keeps the San Angelo ISD mission close to their heart by reflecting that same mission on campus, to engage all students in a relevant and inspiring education that produces future-ready graduates, and uses their campus theme each year to help support the mission. The theme this year is “Root for each other and watch one another grow.” This theme is fundamental to the culture at Glenmore, helping students, teachers and staff remain focused on pursuing their individual hopes and dreams and supporting each other as they work to reach those hopes and dreams. In addition to the learning and growing that takes place in our classrooms, Glenmore offers unique programs, events, and initiatives to cultivate the talents of their students such as the Bilingual Program, GT TRIYS Program, and the “One Book, One School'' Challenge.

Glenmore Elementary is one of two campuses within SAISD hosting the Bilingual Program which is designed to provide Spanish-speaking students, pre-kindergarten through 1st grade, the opportunity to be English proficient by the 3rd grade. The program builds knowledge and learning of academic subjects in a child's first language and English while instilling self-assurance, confidence and cultural pride. Since its inception in May of 2020, the program at Glenmore has grown from 13 students to 31 students!

On Thursday of each week, students identified as Gifted and Talented (GT) gather together in a classroom at Glenmore Elementary, instead of busing to one of our GT magnet campuses, to work on their year-long research project as part of the annual Dr. Carol Ann Bonds Texas Research Institute for Young Scholars (TRIYS) Symposium. The TRIYS Symposium was started by former SAISD Superintendent Dr. Bonds to give GT students the opportunity to do research and develop the attributes within the SAISD Learner Profile to be future-ready learners and successful in the future. Our 1st through 5th grade GT students each independently research and study topics of interest, collaborate with their peers, and present to a panel of judges from all staff positions across the district either one on one or in groups.

This year, thanks to a grant from the San Angelo Schools Foundation, Glenmore Elementary launched the “One School, One Book'' Family Read Along Challenge to promote the many benefits of parents reading aloud to their children. Our families are reading a chapter of “The Mouse and the Motorcycle'' by Beverly Cleary each school night, and each day classes submit an answer to a chapter trivia question. The class that wins gets a Beverly Cleary book for their classroom library. To celebrate completing the book, there will be a poster contest, some fun STEM connections on campus and a craft for families to do together.

“Reading this book together is a wonderful way to connect with one another and build community.” said Principal Teri Gould. “Our students are excited about reading and the response from families has been wonderful. We are already looking forward to our next book launch!”

Glenmore Elementary has a unique connection, partnership, and deeply rooted history with Goodfellow Air Force Base and has been serving our military students since Goodfellow opened in 1940, prior to Glenmore becoming an official San Angelo ISD campus in 1949. Glenmore serves our highest percentage of military-connected elementary students to this day with 35% of its student body coming from Goodfellow. In 2021, Glenmore Elementary received the distinct honor of being named a Texas Education Agency (TEA) Purple Star Designation Campus - an award in recognition of schools that excel in meeting the needs of military-connected students and their families. One of the many ways Glenmore meets those needs is through their Military and Family Life Counselor, Ms. Mary Lou Robbins, and our Goodfellow Air Force Base School Liaison, Ms. Theresa Goodwin, who both provide services to our military-connected families as they transition and during their time at our campuses.

“When my husband was on active duty and we were stationed at Goodfellow, our daughters were Glenmore Jets! As the School Liaison for Goodfellow AFB, I am so proud to be part of such a vested partnership and looking forward to helping SAISD  students achieve their hopes and dreams!” said Theresa Goodwin. “Ms. Mary Lou Robbins has been the embedded Military Family Life Counselor at Glenmore Elementary for the past three years and is assisting military students in transition. She is a wealth of support and knowledge for the teachers educating these highly mobile students!”

The family atmosphere of Glenmore Elementary keeps bringing back alumni and educators to the campus. Current San Angelo ISD Board Trustee Gerald Gallegos is a graduate of SAISD and attended Glenmore Elementary when he was a student. “While I was there I had great role models in my teachers including Mary Francis Butler Owens, Mrs. Coleman, and Mrs. Newman who instilled the belief that one should always give time back to their communities with public service. Go Jets!” said Gerard Gallegos.

We hope you enjoyed this SAISD Campus Spotlight on Glenmore Elementary. We wish our Glenmore Jets, Mrs. Gould, and her Glenmore team a wonderful 2021-2022 school year, and the fulfillment of, and progress toward, growing hopes and dreams!
