San Angelo ISD Celebrated Literacy and Hispanic Heritage Month with Vibrant San Angelo READS! Fall Pop-Up Event

San Angelo ISD and community partners shared a love of literacy combined with a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month with students and the greater community at the San Angelo READS! Fall Pop-Up Event held Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at Reagan Elementary from 5 to 6:30pm.

“It was wonderful to see our community come together to instill the love of reading in our students. Having the community and families partner together to build an impactful culture on our students' learning is impactful and important for their learning,” said Reagan Elementary Principal Brandy Tyner.

The early evening festivities included book giveaways from community partners H-E-B and the Junior League of San Angelo as well as live book read alouds paired with creative book-inspired artwork by the San Angelo Retired Teachers and Associates, free snow cones for children from Bahama Buck’s and a watercolor station by the United Way of the Concho Valley.

SAISD representatives hosted stations at the event including one with opportunities for parents to learn about dyslexia and dyslexia resources as part of Dyslexia Awareness Month and a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) activity center featuring Ozobots. The Ozobots move and perform tricks which are coded just by using a piece of paper and colored markers.

SAISD high school students also added to the celebration with Central High School theater students performing a children’s story book and Lake View Mariachi and Cheer adding music and cheer. SAISD is proud of our high school students who dedicated their time and brought their talents to the event to inspire a love of reading and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and extend a thank you to the educators who develop those talents.

We appreciate our community partners who join us in our goal of inspiring a love of reading and who helped to make the San Angelo READS! Fall Pop-Up event fun and meaningful for our students, families and community including Bahama Buck’s, H-E-B, Junior League of San Angelo, KIXY 94.7 FM, San Angelo Retired Teachers and Associates, and the United Way of the Concho Valley

San Angelo READS!

SAISD kicked off the San Angelo Reads! community-wide literacy initiative last school year on December 9, 2020 with the first annual San Angelo Reads! Day, a day when literacy was celebrated at every SAISD elementary campus with literacy fun like read-ins, unveiling book vending machines and a gift of a book to all SAISD 3rd graders compliments of the San Angelo Area Foundation. SAISD is focused on building literacy skills that create students who are prepared for future successes, inside and outside the classroom and beyond their time in our hallways.

SAISD is committed to building literacy skills which create students who are prepared for future successes, and thus, building a better tomorrow for our students and community! The San Angelo community is invited to help promote literacy by reading at home with children, donating a book to a child in need, or supporting literacy programs in our community.

Follow the San Angelo ISD Facebook, Twitter, and website, www.saisd.org/read, to stay up-to-date on San Angelo Reads! and to find resources to help inspire a love of reading. Community members are encouraged to share how they celebrate literacy and participate in San Angelo Reads! through the hashtag, #SAISDReads. Keep reading, San Angelo!
